Record the product demo once, and fix the layout afterwards

A good demo usually dies in the second take. Zidi records your screen and your camera as separate tracks, so the choices that normally force a re-record, where the camera sits, how big it is, which format the video is in, stay open until you publish.

This page is for product marketers, founders and solutions engineers who need a demo on the site, in the sales deck and in the onboarding email by Friday. It walks through the job, shows what each plan allows, and lists what Zidi leaves to other tools.

The demo workflow, from first click to published page

  1. Record screen and camera together

Record from the Zidi web app, or use the Chrome extension. Its Screen mode opens Chrome's picker for the whole screen, a window or a tab. Chrome Tab mode records a browser tab you choose and can carry that tab's sound; turn on "Record a selected area" and it records the tab you are on, cropped to the area you set. Camera mode records you alone, from a Zidi Studio tab. A 3-second countdown gives you a clean start, and pause and resume let you switch accounts or load data off camera.

  2. Point at what matters while you talk

The extension toolbar has a pen, a highlighter, shapes, arrows and text, a blur tool for customer data, and click highlights, a cursor highlight and a spotlight, so the viewer's eye goes where your words are.

  3. Change the layout after the take

In the editor, move the camera between picture-in-picture positions, change its size and shape, or switch to a split view in one of three ratios. Layout keyframes switch the arrangement at chosen moments, for example full camera for the intro and full screen for the walkthrough.

  4. Cut, caption and brand it

Split and delete on a multi-track timeline with ripple and linked modes, undo and redo. Captions are generated from your speech and styled from 36 presets. Text, shapes, emoji and image overlays, 110 music tracks and your brand kit watermark finish the job.

  5. Publish in the shape each channel needs

Every video has an instant link, and the Share dialog adds an embed code. From the video's page, "Publish it to a webpage" opens a page builder: pick a template, edit the headings, the text and a call-to-action button, and publish a standalone page. Five aspect ratios cover the site, the deck and social feeds.

  6. Measure where attention drops

Views and watch time are reported on every plan. Starter and Pro add full analytics: unique viewers, a retention curve, devices, countries and traffic sources. Use the drop-off point to decide what to cut from the next version of the demo.

On Free you can record, edit and share by link, but you cannot download or export the file, and each edited copy counts toward the 10 videos. If the demo has to live on YouTube or in a slide deck as a file, start on Starter.

Why separate tracks matter for a demo

Most recorders flatten the screen and the camera into one picture the moment you press stop. If the camera bubble covers the one button you needed to show, the fix is another take. Zidi keeps the screen, the camera, the microphone and the system audio as separate lanes on the timeline, which is why the layout is still a decision after recording.

That changes how you record. You can run through the product once at a natural pace and decide later whether the intro is full camera, whether the pricing screen needs the whole frame, and whether the vertical cut for social should keep your face at all. The Layout panel offers presets, a position grid for the camera, size and shape controls, split view, and backgrounds from 22 gradients and 30 solid colors.

One rule does not bend: sound has to be right at recording time. Microphone and system audio cannot be added to a recording afterwards, and on a Mac, Chrome can capture a tab's audio but not system-wide audio. Check the input before a long take, and record a ten-second test if the demo includes product sounds.

Editing: what is in the box, and how far it goes

The editor is built for trimming, arranging and labelling a recording, not for cinematic post-production. Cut splits the selected clip at the playhead and Cut All splits every video and audio track, Delete removes a segment, and the Ripple toggle decides whether the gap closes. Linked mode keeps picture and sound together. The project saves itself a couple of seconds after each change.

AI does the tedious parts. Captions come from the speech in the recording, with the language detected for you, and you can correct any line and its timing in Edit Subtitles. Editing works on a copy as well: opening a recording in the editor creates an edited copy with its own link and leaves the original as it was. Two one-click cleanups on the video's page, remove filler words and remove silence, run in the background and deliver a new copy in the same way, so you can compare before you commit. They accept videos up to 15 minutes on Free, 1 hour on Starter and 3 hours on Pro.

Exports are MP4, rendered in the cloud in Full HD for the chosen aspect ratio at 30 frames per second, and captions are burned into the exported file. There is no 4K export on any plan. Downloading needs Starter or Pro; on Free the demo is shared by link only.

Publishing a demo where buyers will actually see it

The quickest route is the share link, which opens a page with the player, the transcript and, when they exist, an AI summary and timestamped chapters. Viewers do not need an account, and the page plays inline on phones. Nothing is listed publicly: a video is reachable only through its link, and you can add a password when a demo shows unreleased work.

For the website, the embed tab produces an iframe in a responsive or a fixed size, which works in WordPress, Webflow, Wix, Squarespace, Notion and other builders that accept custom HTML. For a campaign or a launch, publish the video as a standalone webpage from the page builder, with your own headings, text and call-to-action button. On Pro that page can sit on your own domain. Two limits apply: a password-protected video cannot be published this way, and views of a published webpage are not counted in the video's analytics. The embed code from the Share dialog points at the share page, so embedded views are counted like any other.

A readable transcript comes with every processed video and sits with the player on its share page, which helps buyers who skim. Published webpages show the video without it. You can copy it, download it as a text file, or translate it, and captions export as an SRT file when another platform asks for one.

What Zidi does not do

  • It records video demos. It does not build clickable, interactive product tours that a visitor steps through on their own.
  • Recording needs Chrome or another Chromium browser on a desktop or laptop computer. There is no desktop app and no recording from a phone.
  • Exports are Full HD at 30 frames per second. There is no 4K export.
  • Audio cannot be added after recording, and on a Mac only a tab's audio can be captured, not system-wide sound.
  • Uploading a video recorded elsewhere needs Starter or Pro. On Free you can only record in Zidi.
  • There is no live streaming and no webinar mode; Zidi is for recorded video.

Product Demos questions

Can I move or resize my camera after I have recorded the demo?

Yes. Screen and camera are kept as separate tracks, so in the editor you can move the camera to another corner, change its size and shape, switch to a split view, or hide it for part of the video with layout keyframes. None of that needs a new recording.

Can I record a product demo on the Free plan?

Yes, within its limits: up to 10 videos of 5 minutes each, with the editor, automatic captions and link sharing included. You cannot download or export the file on Free, and you cannot upload a video recorded elsewhere. Longer demos and MP4 downloads start on Starter.

What quality does Zidi record and export in?

The extension's Auto setting records at up to 2560 by 1440, with 1080p, 720p and 480p as manual choices. Exports render as MP4 in Full HD for the aspect ratio you chose, at 30 frames per second.

Can I put the demo on my own website?

Yes. The Share dialog gives you an iframe embed code in a responsive or fixed size, and it works in most site builders that accept custom HTML. You can also publish the demo as a standalone webpage from the page builder on the video's page, and on Pro that page can use your own domain. Embedded views are counted like any other view; views of a published webpage are not.

Does the demo get captions and a transcript automatically?

Yes. Zidi transcribes the speech, detects the language, and creates captions you can restyle from 36 presets and correct line by line. The transcript appears beside the player on the share page. Captions can be translated, and they are burned into the file when you export it.

How do I know whether the demo is working?

Open the video's analytics. Views and watch time are on every plan. Starter and Pro add full analytics: unique viewers, a retention curve that shows where people leave, devices, countries and traffic sources, with CSV export. Engagement heatmaps and call-to-action click tracking are listed under Pro.
