Engagement heatmap
A visual map of which parts of a video individual viewers watched, rewatched or skipped.
An engagement heatmap shows what viewers did inside a video rather than merely how far they got. Where a retention curve aggregates everyone into a single line, a heatmap keeps the detail: which seconds were watched, which were replayed, which were skipped past.
The distinction matters because the two answer different questions. A retention curve says half the audience left at four minutes. A heatmap can say that the people who stayed rewatched the thirty seconds about pricing twice, which is a different and more commercially interesting fact.
For individual sales conversations the heatmap is the more useful artefact. A prospect who scrubbed straight to the security section and watched it three times has told you what the next conversation is about, and no aggregate number would have revealed it.
Heatmaps require identifying viewers to be useful at the individual level. Aggregated across anonymous traffic they still show which passages hold attention, which is enough for content decisions but not for sales ones.
There is a reasonable expectation question here that vendors rarely raise. Viewers generally understand that a video page counts views; they are more surprised to learn that a sender can see which thirty seconds they replayed. Teams using this data in sales conversations are usually better served by acting on it than by mentioning it, and by not pretending to a prospect that they arrived at an insight by intuition.
One practical caveat: a heatmap is only as informative as the length of the video. On a ninety-second message there is very little inside to map, and the retention curve tells you everything the heatmap would. The detail earns its keep on longer recordings, where viewers genuinely navigate rather than simply stop.
